THE K9-Rx STORY
AN IDEA AHEAD OF ITS TIME. A MISSION THAT NEVER CHANGED.
K9-Rx began more than two decades ago with a simple question: if advances in human performance nutrition could make such a profound difference in people, what could better nutrition do for our dogs?
The answer became K9-Rx.
Born from the sports-nutrition world of the late 1990s, K9-Rx was developed around an idea that was unusual at the time: take canine nutrition as seriously as we took our own.
AN IDEA BORN AT MET-Rx
Before K9-Rx, I worked in the marketing department at MET-Rx during an extraordinary period in the sports-nutrition industry.
Along the way, we began receiving an unusual kind of testimonial. People weren’t just telling us what MET-Rx was doing for them—they were telling us they were giving it to their pets.
Some had healthy dogs. Others had older dogs whose owners described problems with their skin and coat, mobility, strength and overall condition. The stories coming back to us were remarkable.
Eventually, I tried it with my own dogs. What I saw made me start looking much more closely at canine nutrition and the pet-food industry.
The deeper I looked, the more convinced I became that there was an opportunity to do something very different.
“Why not take what we had learned about advanced human nutrition and build something specifically for dogs?”
FROM PET-Rx TO K9-Rx
The original idea was straightforward: create PET-Rx as an extension of MET-Rx.
I took the concept to Dr. A. Scott Connelly, founder of MET-Rx. At the time, MET-Rx was growing at an incredible pace, and a pet-nutrition line simply wasn’t something the company was ready to pursue.
But the idea stayed with me.
And with the help of talented people I’d come to know in the sports-nutrition world, K9-Rx began to take shape.
BUILT SPECIFICALLY FOR DOGS
The next step was bringing in one of MET-Rx’s top sports nutritionists and formulators, who went to UC Davis to research canine nutrition and determine how the principles we understood from human performance nutrition could be adapted specifically for dogs.
He returned with the research he needed, and within weeks the foundation of the original K9-Rx formula had been developed.
It wasn’t simply MET-Rx repackaged for dogs. The formula was built specifically around canine nutrition, incorporating a much broader combination of nutritional ingredients while retaining the high-quality protein foundation that had been so important to MET-Rx.
A YEAR OF R&D
Developing the formula was only the beginning.
For roughly the next year, K9-Rx was put into the hands of dog owners. We distributed samples, listened to their experiences, refined how we explained the product and continued working out how to bring an entirely new kind of canine nutritional supplement to market.
At the same time, we began looking for the right financial and marketing partners to take K9-Rx to a much larger audience.
Then MET-Rx was sold.
CONNELLY JOINS K9-Rx
After the sale of MET-Rx, I went back to Dr. Connelly—this time with K9-Rx already developed and a plan for turning it into a national brand.
The strategy was ambitious but simple: introduce K9-Rx directly to dog owners through television, build national awareness and ultimately establish K9-Rx as a new category in canine nutrition.
This time, Scott was in.
His experience, credibility and understanding of nutritional science became an important part of K9-Rx’s early years.
FROM THE K9-Rx ARCHIVES
BEFORE SOCIAL MEDIA. BEFORE DTC WAS CALLED DTC. THERE WAS THE INFOMERCIAL.
In the early days of K9-Rx, direct-response television was one of the most powerful ways to introduce a new product directly to consumers.
A small team came together from the direct-response and sports-nutrition worlds to create the original K9-Rx television infomercial.
We shot it, tested it—and the response exceeded our expectations.
THE ORIGINAL K9-Rx INFOMERCIAL
THE ORIGINAL K9-Rx
More than two decades of K9-Rx history.
The packaging has changed. The advertising has changed. And our understanding of canine nutrition continues to evolve. But the idea behind K9-Rx has remained remarkably consistent.
Archival materials are shown as historical artifacts. They reflect the product and marketing of their time, not current K9-Rx claims or offers.
THE PACKAGE CHANGED. THE IDEA DIDN’T.
From the original beef-flavored K9-Rx in a plastic tub to today’s K9-Rx, the fundamental idea has remained the same:
Give dog owners a simple way to add serious nutritional support to the food they’re already feeding.
Better ingredients. Thoughtful formulation. Easy to use. Built for dogs.
THE LONG ROAD
K9-Rx didn’t follow the path we originally imagined.
There were starts, stops, changing markets and plenty of lessons along the way. Eventually, I took responsibility for carrying K9-Rx forward and kept the company alive through all of them.
There were certainly easier times to walk away.
I didn’t.
Because I never stopped believing in the idea behind K9-Rx.
THE NEXT CHAPTER
MORE BEST DAYS TOGETHER.
Today, K9-Rx is being rebuilt for a new generation of dog owners.
The brand looks different. The way we reach customers is different. And we’ve continued to evolve the product for today’s market.
But the reason K9-Rx exists hasn’t changed.
Dogs give us some of the best days of our lives. Our job is to help give them more of theirs.
